‘Destiny 2’ Now Forces Players to Complete Bounties and Challenges with an XP Cap

Destiny 2’s Episode/Act model has been somewhat controversial, with skeptics (like me) saying it relies too heavily on time-limited content and rewards. But that concept is now proving particularly annoying.

That’s because of a clarification Bungie made in this week’s patch that players weren’t supposed to be able to progress their Season Pass rank past 100 in Act 1, which ends in two weeks. Currently, there are 50 additional tiers unlocked in Act 2, and another 50 in Act 3. However, while the XP gains after level 100 mean a lot less, you can still progress all the way to 105, 115, wherever you’ve been given your playtime. The idea then was that you could instantly claim a bunch of rewards when the next act unlocked, even if it’s a bit of a grind to try to do it now. Although you can get there through a lot of random play.

But this change means that XP gains once you hit 100 mean… nothing. You only get Bright Engrams after that, easily the most useless thing in Destiny 2, where I’ve gotten a handful of meaningful rewards from them in seven full years of playing.

The behavior that this XP leveling concept now removes is that in theory, players should now keep the two bounties they complete and not claim the weekly challenges they complete until the next act is released. seasons It’s common practice to get a head start, but now for season pass progression (which includes valuable things like the Red Death catalyst) you have to do it twice. In a season, otherwise you’re just burning that XP outside of progress towards minor power gains.

I understand that Bungie wants to save some things for new Act content. New missions, new loot, new activities. But limiting the playtime of the Battle Pass and creating very strange player behaviors, like not claiming a dozen or more challenges over three weeks, seems like an unintended effect of this system. I really don’t see a problem with letting players go through a 200-tier Battle Pass at their own pace. There’s nothing in there that requires that kind of time limit, with the exception of a few mystery locations that could of course be revealed later.

While the time cap on missions and loot probably isn’t going to change, it seems like an easy fix, and it kind of made an already weird time cap situation with these rewards worse, even though 4x the XP required to level up was a good thing before. We’ll see if they make any more adjustments in this next act or episode.
