ForbesNYT “Strands” Friday July 5th Clue, Spangram and Answers

Welcome all Strandistarians! This is my first day writing this guide in three weeks, with my colleagues Kris Holt and Paul Tassi taking over on the weeks I’m not writing them myself. Well done on the teamwork!

This is also the first Strands guide I’ve written since the app joined the New York Times’ games/apps section, having been in beta until now. Welcome to all new Strands players, whom I call various forms of Stranders, Stranded, Stradistas, etc.

If you play Worlde, I cover this game every day, so be sure to follow me here on this blog so you never miss a post, all witty, sexy and wonderful. I’m very humble, if you haven’t noticed.

How to play Strands

The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a classic crossword puzzle. It’s in beta right now, which means it will only stay available if enough people play it every day. In other words, keep playing. Our collective mission is to keep this game alive and on the app!

Every day you can play a new game of Strands. The game gives you a grid of six by eight letters. The goal is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you will get a clue on this theme. When you find a theme word, it remains highlighted in blue.

You will also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram connects two opposite sides of the board. Although the theme words are not a proper noun, the spangram can be a proper noun. When you find the spangram, it remains highlighted in yellow.

Strands is still not on the New York Times games app, but you can play it here.

Today’s Strand Breakdown

Oddly enough, the top half of today’s puzzle was very easy for me, while the bottom half left me stumped. I found SPEAK almost immediately, followed by SIGN. Then I spotted ARTICULATION – the spangram – almost instantly, before finding PRONOUNCE and SPEAK.

After that, I was stumped. The X threw me off, as did the two S’s which I knew must be the end of a word. Once I finally managed to decipher EXPRESS, TELL was pretty obvious, but even knowing I only had one word left, it took me a while to figure out DECLARE. Overall, a pretty good puzzle today!
