Japan has broken the world record for internet speed with 402 Tbps, surpassing the previous record of 321 Tbps by 25%.

The data transmission speed, achieved in a lab at Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, was achieved using a new technique that “unlocks wavelength ranges previously inaccessible to existing infrastructure,” Next shark reported this week.

Specifically, the researchers amplified data signals to take full advantage of the data transmission capabilities of fiber optic cables, thereby increasing the transmission bandwidth over 50 km of fiber optic cables. Tom’s Guide reported.

In theory, such a speed would allow 12,500 movies to be downloaded in a single second. Researchers hope that this speed will be achievable in everyday life in the near future.

The new record was presented at the 47th International Conference on Optical Fiber Communications in March.
