The saga continues.
Apple and Epic are at odds again, this time over a dispute over a third-party Epic app store designed for Apple devices.
Go to TwitterEpic said Friday night that “Apple has rejected our Epic Games Store notarization request twice now, claiming that the design and position of Epic’s “Install” button is too similar to Apple’s “Get” button and that our “In-App Purchases” label is too similar to the App Store’s “In-App Purchases” label.
“We use the same ‘Install’ and ‘In-App Purchases’ naming conventions that are used in popular app stores across multiple platforms, and we follow standard conventions for iOS app buttons. We’re simply trying to create a store that mobile users can easily understand, and disclosing in-app purchases is a regulatory best practice that all stores follow these days.
“Apple’s rejection is arbitrary, obstructive, and in violation of the DMA, and we have raised our concerns with the European Commission. Barring further obstacles from Apple, we remain prepared to launch the game on the Epic Games Store and Fortnite on iOS in the EU in the coming months.”
Epic then issued an update that read: “Apple has indicated to certain press channels that while they have approved our current EGS iOS app for notarization, they are still requiring Epic to change the user interface in a future release. Epic disputes this.”
Talk with NBC NewsAn Apple representative confirmed the approval of the third-party store and the request for changes to further differentiate Apple’s official App Store from Epic’s third-party one.
