Apple takes inspiration from Hitchcock in new privacy-focused ad

Apple has released a new “iPhone Privacy” feature designed to show phone users what’s really happening when they browse the web on browsers other than Safari. We’ll let you guess which browser the iPhone maker is talking about.

With winged security cameras hovering over and attacking phone users, the ad could be reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 film The birdsOr are we just showing our age?

The iPhone maker said it wanted to raise awareness about what’s really happening when people browse the web, and that other browsers allow data companies to track you across multiple websites, collect your location data without your permission, and let web extensions violate your privacy.

The digital version of the ad, presented in a vertical format, however, takes a completely different approach. See below.

Safair, on the other hand, prevents cross-site tracking, helps protect your location data, has privacy-preserving web extensions, and a cutting-edge private browsing mode, with real protections.

The launch of this ad coincides with Apple releasing a series of new features designed to protect users’ private data. In its new private browsing mode on Safari, Apple introduced protection against link tracking, advanced protection against fingerprinting, disabled by default extensions with access to the website or history, and began blocking the networks of many known trackers.

The company also limited the lifespan of cookies set in responses from masked third-party IP addresses. The company also expanded its Web AdAttributionKit (formerly Private Click Measurement) to replace tracking parameters in URLs to help developers understand how their marketing campaigns are performing even in private browsing.

Apple has made the privacy and security offered by its iPhones a key selling point for its products in recent years, regularly releasing new spots and creatives designed to convince buyers that it takes the issue more seriously than Google.
