It looks like you can expect a lot more games on Netflix, as the streamer apparently has over 80 in development right now.
At this point, it’s pretty clear that Netflix hasn’t quite figured out the video game world yet. It’s obviously dominated the film and television industry for years now, and while it’s made some moves to stake a claim in the gaming industry, like acquiring Oxenfree 2 developer Night School Studio (which you can, of course, play through Netflix), there’s also been a free Sonic game, one of the best roguelites around, and a bunch of other stuff, but I wouldn’t say most people are aware of Netflix’s attempt to become a gaming serviceWithin the framework of the company Latest earnings conference callHowever, Netflix co-CEO, chairman and CEO Gregory Peters has discussed his plans for gaming and how he wants to grow the division (thanks, Eurogamer).

Netflix seems to be moving pretty quickly into narrative games right now, and Peters says they’re “easier to create. And we’re putting them in a narrative hub that we call Netflix Stories.” Peters added that starting this month, in July, Netflix will be “launching about one new title a month in Netflix Stories, and it’s incredible IP like Emily in Paris and Selling Sunset. And we have a lot more, including very different types of games that are still coming in the quarters and years to come.”
Ted Sarandos, another co-CEO, chairman and CEO of Netflix, also spoke about how Netflix can serve fans with its games, saying, “I think the idea of being able to take a show and give the superfan a place to be between seasons and even beyond, to be able to use the gaming platform to introduce new characters and new storylines or new twists, you could do those kinds of things now and then they could come to fruition in the next season or the movie sequel.”
These ambitions seem pretty bold, although I’m not very confident that such a solution will succeed – remember Defiance? Still, there are already plenty of really interesting games you can play through Netflix, so hopefully there will be more to come to add value for your money, especially given how often prices increase.
