The weight loss is marginal, but every little bit helps.

Whenever a new M car comes out, it’s usually a must-have for enthusiasts. But the BMW M5 has gotten a much cooler reception. The sports sedan has been criticized for its massive weight and somewhat questionable styling, and the plug-in hybrid powertrain hasn’t been a great fit. The question is: Can M Performance Parts help the G90 live up to the prestige of its predecessors?

Available from day one, these factory upgrades add a touch of carbon fiber to the M5’s large body. From the front spoiler to the split rear diffuser, the super sedan gets an assortment of lightweight elements. All of this is just a drop in the ocean, considering the car’s colossal 5,390 pounds. The carbon fuel cap or sill extensions won’t make much of a difference, either.

In addition to the carbon elements, the new BMW M5 can be equipped with matte black side decals and an aramid shark fin antenna. Light alloy wheels will be added to the range from next summer, along with M Performance branded tire covers. Even the valve stem caps proudly display the letter “M”. In addition, an embossed “M5” logo adorns the exhaust tailpipes made from a combination of titanium and carbon fiber.

The M5s presented here by BMW are equipped with numerous optional equipment that help reduce weight. The carbon roof reduces the overall weight by 30 kg, while the carbon-ceramic brakes reduce it by 25 kg. Still, this is a marginal weight loss. A stricter diet is perhaps being planned for a possible M5 CS. The old one reduced the overall weight of the M5 Competition by 105 kg.

Despite several options and M Performance parts, BMW will not offer carbon bucket seats at the launch of the seventh-generation M5. The limited-edition CS special edition even had them in the rear. Centerlock wheels are also absent, although they are available for the smaller M3 sedan.

However, all is forgiven knowing that the M5 Touring’s debut is just around the corner. The G99 has obtained its US visa and is expected to go on sale before the end of the year. It will probably cost a bit more than the sedan, which has a starting price of $120,675. Of course, that’s before the regular options, the special individual colors, and those M Performance parts.
