Butcher’s Buffet opens Australia’s largest Korean barbecue restaurant

Long live the king of Korean barbecue buffets: a huge 500 square metre restaurant on Sussex Street in Haymarket with space for 200 diners, 60 individual barbecue stations and private rooms for up to 30 guests.

After struggling to keep up with customer demand at its first Chinatown location, Sydney chain Butcher’s Buffet has moved 20 metres away, opening not only its largest restaurant to date, but also (it claims) the country’s largest all-you-can-eat Korean barbecue buffet.

Butcher’s Buffet has enjoyed meteoric success since opening its first restaurant in Eastwood in 2019. That surge in popularity has led to a string of new locations in Strathfield, Blacktown, Cabramatta and Chinatown. However, with an overwhelming number of diners vying for a table in Haymarket, it seemed the only way to go was to go big, really big.

Open seven days a week, Butcher’s Buffer offers a choose-your-own-adventure dining experience. Guests create their own culinary journey rather than following an existing menu, choosing from a diverse selection of meats including bulgogi, soy-marinated scotch tenderloin, wagyu beef brisket, spicy pork belly, beef ribs and more.

The restaurant also features a hot dining area where diners can feast on prepared dishes including pork chops, homemade dumplings, potato noodles, and of course, Korean fried chicken. Visitors can pair their meal with a wide range of beverages, including Korean beer, flavored soju, and iced teas. While the menu is primarily aimed at carnivores, the restaurant does accommodate certain dietary preferences. Halal chicken and beef cuts are available upon request, and seasonal additions help keep the menu fresh for regular customers.

But it’s not just the food that draws Sydneysiders to Butcher’s Buffet. With sleek, modern decor, neon lighting and a K-pop soundtrack, party vibes abound, making the chain a particularly big hit with younger customers.

However, while the restaurant’s atmosphere is contemporary, the philosophy behind the cuisine, overseen by group executive chef Joanne Lee, draws on the rich traditions of Korean culinary culture. “Butchers Buffet ensures that only the freshest ingredients and quality meats are used,” Lee explains. “Our meats and food selections have been carefully selected, freshly prepared and deliciously prepared. Even our sauces are made daily in-store without any preservatives.”
