THE EOS R1 is a camera that emphasizes its speed, offering a staggering 40fps continuous shooting rate with an electronic shutter that also promotes blackout-free viewing and greatly reduced rolling shutter distortion. The R1 uses a 24.2MP full-frame back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor, offering sensitivity up to ISO 102,400 and also employs neural network noise reduction for high clarity and sharpness. Also new, and also beneficial for shooting moving subjects, is Canon’s Pre-Continuous Shooting mode, which can buffer up to 20 frames before fully pressing the shutter, ensuring you never miss a shot.

Beyond a brand new sensor, the Canon EOS R1 The R1 also features the most powerful processor in EOS history with DIGIC Accelerator. This is combined with the proven DIGIC X processor and stacked-sensor design, for extremely fast readout speeds and the ability to perform instant image analysis and AE/AF detection while shooting at maximum speeds. DIGIC Accelerator is key to the R1’s autofocus performance, adding refined subject detection and tracking capabilities. This intelligent Dual Pixel AF system is a cross-type AF system designed to lock onto moving subjects, with an Action Priority setting, and works in conjunction with the enhanced Eye Control AF.
This improved focusing system also uses deep learning to analyze information about the ball, joints, torso, action, and head for more accurate tracking. Subject tracking can also be maintained even when subjects cross in the frame and the EOS R1 also benefits from the People Priority Shooting feature to detect, track and prioritize focus for up to 10 different people.
Despite its presence as a stills camera, the EOS R1 also offers solid video capabilities and supports an integrated workflow with Cinema EOS cameras. The R1 supports up to 6K Raw recording 60p or 4K Recording MP4 60p, using a 6K Oversampling area with 10-bit 4:2:2 sampling and high speed 4K 120p and FHD 240p recording is also available. Proxy recording is possible with split backup to separate memory cards and there are a host of custom picture profiles built into the camera including Canon Log2, 3, PQ and HLG.
As a camera designed for professional use in the most challenging situations, the EOS R1 is robust and intuitive to use, while being well connected to share your files in an instant. The body features a magnesium alloy exterior that is dust and water resistant; it measures 0.7″ shorter than the EOS-1D X Mark III and weighs 2.1 pounds, more than half a pound lighter than its SLR predecessor. It features high resolution 9.44 m-dot, 0.9x high-magnification electronic viewfinder, larger 3.2-inch vari-angle rear screen, and dual CFexpress Type B memory card slots. Connectivity-wise, it’s the first EOS with Wi-Fi 6E/Wi-Fi 6 wireless support and the first with 2.5G Base-T wired LAN support.
