Double Dragon Revive is a new 3D game in the veteran beat ’em up series published by Arc System Works, developer of Dragon Ball FighterZ and Guilty Gear Strive, and developed by Yuke’s, creator of AEW Fight Forever.
The Japanese developer has announced Double Dragon Revive with the release of a teaser trailer, below, which shows off the new 3D visuals.
Double Dragon Revive features returning characters and familiar gameplay where you collect weapons scattered throughout the levels and use area gadgets to defeat enemies. Here’s the official blurb:
The Double Dragon series has defined the belt-scrolling action genre since it first hit arcades in 1987. Now it’s back as Double Dragon Revive, thanks to the passionate support of retro gaming fans over the years!
The game offers a modern belt-scrolling action experience with exhilarating gameplay that fully exploits Arc System Works’ experience in fighting game development.
Double Dragon Revive is planned for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Steam in 2025. A physical edition is planned for PS4 and PS5, as well as a digital version on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and Steam. There is no Xbox One or Nintendo Switch version.
Double Dragon was a mainstay of arcades and consoles in the late 80s and early 90s, appearing on a multitude of platforms and at one point teaming up with Battletoads (It’s true). It is revered as one of the most influential beat ’em ups of all time, with classics like Final Fight and Streets of Rage following in its footsteps.
Arc System Works has acquired the rights to Double Dragon and other classic beat’em up series Kunio Kun (River City) from Technos Japan Corp in 2015. Since then, it has released several games in the aforementioned series. Among them, Double Dragon 4, made in collaboration with the series’ original director Yoshihisa Kishimoto, and its anime-inspired spin-off River City Girls.
While the old received bad reviewsthe latter collected Critical acclaim. Additionally, River City Girls 2 featured Double Dragon protagonists Billy and Jimmy Lee as playable DLC characters. A roguelike spin-off, titled Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons, was released in 2023 and received average reviews.
