Expect the unexpected: activities for kids in our libraries | City of Sydney


From toddlers to tweens and teens, our libraries are full of exciting resources and workshops designed to entertain, educate and fill the minds of children of all ages. We’ve rounded up 6 things kids can discover in our libraries.

Want to learn how to create and print your own 3D design? Join the 3D Printing Club, where youth ages 12-16 are guided to create their own 3D designs using open source software like Tinkercad and Cura in our fully equipped makerspace.

There is also 3D printing in our Makertime for families, Free access to Makertime 16+ And Makertime Workshops for Families on Weekends.

Experienced facilitators show kids the ropes, discuss and help them bring their ideas to life. It’s a space that encourages collaboration, sharing ideas and exploring free online resources.

A tech-free workshop for kids that will allow them to draw manga-style characters that reflect their personalities. They will use panels and layouts to bring their unique stories to life. From dark and mysterious worlds to playful and cheerful characters, the only limit is where their imagination will take them.

The workshop provides pencils, Artline pens and colored markers to help them unleash their inner comic artist.

This creative coding workshop puts the fun into fundamental coding skills, with the goal of helping kids create something expressive rather than functional.

In this beginner-level workshop, kids can use the magic of code to create a printable work of art they can take home.

In this 2-hour workshop, kids ages 8-12 will dive into a range of robotics activities that explore the five principles of STEAM: science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Together, they’ll build scribble robots and then see what happens when we put them all in the same arena!

This workshop combines digital and analog technologies for a hands-on learning experience.

Promote your young child’s literacy and language skills through group singing, reading, and other fun activities.

Rhymetime, for children ages 0-2, combines nursery rhymes, movement, music and singing to help develop early reading and writing skills.

Storytime, for children ages 3 to 5, helps develop a love of reading and literacy skills, and encourages social interaction for school readiness in a playful environment.

These sessions are presented in Auslan, English and Mandarin at Darling Square, Glebe, Green Square and Surry Hills Libraries during term times.
