Ahead of their July 10 launch, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Fold 6 continue to leak, but a recent spec sheet has revealed an interesting downgrade to the Flip 6’s cover display.
The Galaxy Z Flip series has featured a cover display using an AMOLED panel from the beginning. It was small at first, but the Galaxy Z Flip 5 offered a fairly large and capable outer display.
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is expected to use the same size cover display, but with one big change.
A leaked spec sheet has revealed that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will switch to an IPS LCD panel for its cover display. The display itself will be the same size at 3.4 inches, but will use LCD instead of AMOLED. It also has the same resolution at 720×748.
It’s an odd change, and there’s not much in the way of logical reasoning here either.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5’s cover display was rated for a maximum brightness of 1,600 nits, a bit low by modern standards, but an updated AMOLED display would be just as capable of achieving higher brightness than an IPS LCD. It’s also odd simply because Samsung hasn’t used an LCD panel in any of its flagship releases in a long time.
Additionally, there are rumors that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will be more expensive.
Update 7/7: According to sources speaking to SamMobileThe Galaxy Z Flip 6 will ultimately retain its AMOLED cover display. Apparently, that spec sheet wasn’t final and the mention of IPS was a “typo.” While that seems like a pretty serious mistake to make, the change never made sense in the first place anyway.
Whatever Samsung’s reasoning, we’ll likely know more when the device officially launches on July 10.
