Just after the announcement of the general Xbox Game Pass price increase starting in September, many players have canceled their subscription or are looking to save money on Xbox Game Pass before the price increase. If you have an expired subscription right now and don’t know the conversion trick, please contact us. this Reddit postI can confirm that this still works. With this trick, you can get a Game Pass Ultimate subscription for less than $6 per month.
The conversion trick is to use the 3:2 conversion from Game Pass Core to Game Pass Ultimate, and it will still work after the price increase in September. However, and this is crucial, Microsoft is going to prevent us from stacking our subscriptions for more than 13 months. So now is the time to take advantage of this and sign up for 2 years of Game Pass Ultimate for the equivalent of $5.86 per month. Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Make sure your Game Pass Ultimate subscription has expired, if you have one.
This may sound a bit silly, but even if you’ve already cancelled your Game Pass Ultimate subscription, double-check that it’s In fact expired. For example, I cancelled mine today to take advantage of this offer, but I can’t actually start the process until July 21st because that’s the day I paid for my subscription. Even if you cancel, you won’t expire until the end of the period you paid for, and this offer do not work with current subscriptions.
Step 2. Purchase a code for Game Pass Core
It’s up to you where to buy Game Pass Core, but the cheapest place right now is CD Keys, where you can buy a full year for $43.29. Whether you buy one year or three years depends on your own budget, but to maximize the savings from this deal, we recommend buying the maximum 3 years, for a total of $129.87. Don’t buy for more than three years, your Xbox will not allow you to use it beyond this period.
Once purchased, you can redeem them on your Xbox or on the Microsoft website, taking care not to agree to recurring billing each time.
WARNING:If you purchase three one-year subscriptions, do not accept any bonus months in exchange for activating recurring billing when redeeming codes. This will interrupt the process as Microsoft does not allow more than 3 years of accumulation and any bonus months you take count towards the maximum.
Step 3: Purchase a code for 1 month of Game Pass Ultimate
After you use up your 3 years (or whichever you choose) of Game Pass Core, you will need to purchase 1 month of Game Pass Ultimate, the cheapest place to do this right now is also CD Keys for $10.99 but be sure to only buy the code we linked. There is a slightly cheaper code posted on the site for $8.99 that clearly states it is not for people with live subscriptions. Don’t buy it, we’ve linked the correct code below.
Step 4 – Redeem your code for Game Pass Ultimate and convert your Game Pass Core
Here’s the trick. When you redeem your code for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, your Xbox or Microsoft website will ask you if you want to convert your existing Game Pass Core subscription to Game Pass Ultimate at a 3:2 ratio. Accept this conversion.
Your 3-year Game Pass Core will be converted to a 2-year Game Pass Ultimate. You just paid $140.86 for two years, instead of the $479 you would have paid if you had paid $19.99 per month. Hooray!
- Base Game Pass $43.29 x 3 years = $129.97
- Ultimate Game Pass $10.99 during 1 month
- Total expenses $140.86 for 2 years of Game Pass Ultimate
- Works at $5.86 per month, compared to the $19.99 a month costs in September.

If the above seems like a hassle, or you simply can’t take advantage of this deal because you have an existing subscription that runs beyond the September price hike, you can still save money on Game Pass Ultimate simply by stacking 3-month codes from CD Keys, which for a year works out to $127.96. Starting September 12, Microsoft will prevent us from stacking codes for more than 13 months on certain tiers, so now is the time to take advantage of the discounts.
Xbox Game Pass remains great value despite price increases
While the new pricing tiers that will be launching in September are confusing to say the least, we have a full article here covering Microsoft’s announcement of the new pricing structure and the difference between the tiers. In short, while the messaging is questionable, I firmly believe that for $15 per month, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is still the best value for money when it comes to gaming. The library is constantly growing with bigger and better titles, and it will be the cheapest way to play the new Call of Duty Black Ops 6, which is coming later this year. You also get Xbox Game Pass on PC and console, as well as access to Xbox Cloud Gaming and discounts if you want to buy your games. Did we mention that you can now play Xbox on your Amazon Fire Stick too?
Still, while I think it’s a good value, all of my subscriptions increase year over year, including things like Amazon Prime and Netflix, so I’ll be saving wherever I can with deals and tricks like mentioned in this article.
