Google Maps is finally adding “speedometer” and “speed limits” features to iOS and CarPlay to help iPhone users avoid speeding tickets while driving.
These features have been available on Android devices and Android Auto for a long time. They were introduced to Android in 2019 and, in May of that year, were expanded to more than 40 countries after being limited to certain markets.
Now, if you are an iPhone user, you will be able to see your vehicle speed displayed in miles or kilometers depending on your region once you start navigation on Google Maps.
You can enable the speedometer and speed limits by tapping your profile picture in the Google Maps app on your iPhone, then going to Settings > Navigation > Driving Options. Once enabled, the speed limit feature will change color on the speedometer to prompt you to drive within the speed limits set in your area.
This means you can easily monitor your driving speed without taking your attention off the road, based on the real-time speed data provided.
Google has emphasized that the in-app speedometer is intended for informational purposes only, acknowledging that external factors may cause minor discrepancies between the app reading and the vehicle’s actual speed. Therefore, drivers should always rely on their vehicle’s speedometer for accurate speed confirmation.
The reason why Google rolled out these features to iOS and CarPlay is simply to give iPhone users the same benefit that was previously exclusive to Android users so they don’t get ticketed for speeding while driving.
The software giant also assured iPhone users that it is rolling out the features globally, with TechCrunch reporting that the new features have been spotted on Google Maps for iPhone users in India.
