Google has updated its Google Maps app for Android users, and there have been some major changes to the user interface.
The navigation app that millions of Australians rely on daily is constantly evolving and while updates may take some getting used to, they have been designed to increase usability.
The latest user interface (UI) changes are not yet available in iOS, but are rolling out globally to Android users.

The most obvious change was how locations are displayed on screen once the user has plotted them.
Tapping the location search bar will still bring up a full-screen page of predicted location suggestions as usual, but once destinations are entered the UI has a lighter look.
Now, instead of the top quarter of the map being blocked off with travel locations and buttons to determine the mode of transportation (driving, public transit, carpooling or taxi service, or biking), only the locations will remain.
They will float on the map in a bubble at the top of the screen, while transport mode buttons will be displayed on an expandable “leaf” at the bottom of the screen, improving thumb accessibility for the hand holding the phone.
The various leaves, which appear throughout the app, have also received an interface overhaul and now feature more rounded edges.
All this allows you to view more of the map while using it.
However, a previous feature that allowed the search bar to be moved completely off-screen by swiping up, and brought back by tapping on the map, has been removed with the update.
