Cycling with headphones is always going to be divisive, but as I’ve written about many times before, bone conduction or open-ear headphones offer an option for a pair of the best cycling headphones, without the controversial issue of blocking out all surrounding sounds.
However, sharing this deal may get me into trouble, as I’ll have to backtrack on my previous “Forget Shokz” rants.
It’s not that I’ve ever considered them a bad pair of bone conduction headphones – quite the contrary, our review of the Shokz OpenRun rated them highly – it’s just that there have always been good, cheaper alternatives.
We’ve scoured Amazon and other online retailers for the best Amazon Prime Day bike deals, and this one certainly stands out from the crowd.
I’ve always waxed lyrical about cheaper alternatives to the Shokz OpenRun, with Haylou earning much of my adoration for creating a viable alternative for anyone, like me, on a very tight disposable income.
This price change now puts the Shokz OpenRun in a much more accessible category, and now I’m hesitant to buy a pair myself.
I’ve had the privilege of testing several pairs of headphones, and these are often ranked among the best, not only for sound quality, but also for fit.
The fact that you can choose between two sizes is a great feature for me, and the good news is that both sizes are offered at the same price.
Like any bone conduction headset, the Shokz OpenRun will take some time to get used to, as it vibrates the bones in your jaw. Once you get used to the feeling, you’ll find that it’s more comfortable than traditional in-ear or over-ear models.
They are also more versatile. When used at home to prepare meals in the kitchen, they eliminate the need for endless hand washing and then removing the earbuds to respond to a cry of “Mmmmmmm!” They also greatly reduce the risk of earbuds “plopping” during the risky task of washing dishes.
Until now, I’ve always dismissed the Shokz OpenRun because of their price. But at this discounted price, they’re suddenly on my radar and I’m now afraid I’ll regret not buying them.
It’s really a question of “if not now, when”?
