Arrowhead has just revealed the next major update for Helldivers 2: Freedom Escalation. Coming on August 6th, it will be the game’s first major update. It introduces the ability to take on the new CR10 “Super-Helldive” difficulty, as well as new mission objectives, larger enemy outposts, new bugs and bots, and environmental hazards.

While it’s great to see new bugs, bots, and other gameplay improvements fixed, there are a number of more subtle and welcome changes under the hood, including revisions to the kicking mechanic. Time will tell if HD2 can return to the heights it reached just a few months ago, but it’s certainly a statement of intent from Arrowhead that shows they’re determined that their IP is here to stay.

Escalation of Freedom seeks to shake up the boring setting of Helldivers 2

Arrowhead has consistently come up with new narratives and directions for the game, though this will be the first of its kind to revamp everything.

One of the major updates is the fight against “grievance kicking”, an issue that causes players to lose loot they would have previously received. The fix is now that “all items can be picked up by the player before extraction”, making it impossible to lose loot due to trolls.

Highlights of the update include the return of the Impaler and a new “supercharged Brood Commander” in the form of the Terminid Alpha Commander. There will also be a major change to the social menu, which has been a big issue for many who find the user experience outdated and awkward.

Can the major update wake up fans?

It’s refreshing to see Helldivers 2 get its first major update. Especially considering the recent news that the game has dropped below 10,000 players for the first time. This is likely due in part to Arrowhead’s summer break, which, while much needed, likely saw player numbers plummet.
