New 100% electric MG S5 SUV on surprise sale, exports likely

Manufacturers must obtain approval from a government regulator to sell each new vehicle in China. Once a month, a list of vehicles approved for sale is released, accompanied by important information such as key specifications and photos. It’s no surprise that manufacturers aren’t too happy about this, but usually a considerable amount of information has already been released to the public by this time. Sometimes, however, the surprise is complete, and this month it’s the MG S5.

The S5 all-electric compact SUV seems to have surprised people. At the front, the MG S5 features a classic X-shape with sleek headlights and a lower air intake. The split grille at the bottom is similar to that of the MG Cyberster. A wavy line runs from the front fender to the rear of the car. At the rear, there is a through taillight and an overall clean look. The car is available with 17-inch and 18-inch wheels.

The MG S5 has dimensions of 4476, 1849 and 1621 mm (l/w/h) and the wheelbase is 2730 mm. There are two separate listings from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). Both show the same 125 kW TZ180XS0951 electric motor mounted on the rear axle powering the car and sourced from United Automotive Electronics. The top speed is 170 km/h.

Different weights are listed, with 1,615 kg presumably being the base version, and the other listing showing weights of 1,685 and 1,740 kg.

With the top-of-the-line version, the difference between the two weights listed may indicate two different battery capacities. All cars use lithium iron phosphate batteries assembled by SAIC Venture with CATL.

Options include a panoramic roof as well as various wheel and mirror options.

SAIC-owned MG is celebrating its centenary this year. The MG S5 is likely to be produced on the same platform as the MG 4 (Mulan), with previous reports indicating that the platform would be used for a series of electric vehicles. Additionally, this is the first time MG has used an S name in China. Earlier this year, MG applied the S9 name to a rebadged Rising R7 on display in Geneva for the European market. It is highly likely that the MG S5 will be exported.
