The Nintendo Switch is now the developer’s longest-running console.
By VGCThe home/portable hybrid has been around for 2,687 days (that’s seven years, four months, and just under two weeks). The console was originally released on March 3, 2017, beating the Famicom (or NES in the West) by just one day.
As the site notes, the distance between other Nintendo consoles has been gradually closing outside of these two. Thanks to global launches, VGC determined that the gap between the Nintendo 64 and the Nintendo Gamecube was 1,909 days, while the Nintendo Wii and WiiU had a gap of 1,892 days.
On the other hand, the WiiU and Switch had the shortest jump of the bunch, at 1,566 days. It’s also worth noting that this is only for home consoles; when it comes to handhelds, the Switch lags behind the original Game Boy, which lasted 4,352 days before being supplanted by the Game Boy Advance.
Long live the Nintendo Switch!
The Switch’s long tail may be due to the immediate launch with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild And 1-2-Switch. Every year there have been at least two major first-party launches like Super Mario Odyssey, Metroid Dread, Or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Each of these games (and many more) has been strong sellers and awards darlings. Nintendo has been releasing first-party games at such a pace that even with a possible successor on the way, it still has time to release a few more Mario games.
Switch sales have recently increased collapsedwhich is quite natural for a console that is approaching ten years old. But even if we know that a new console is coming relatively soonIt’s going to go out with a bang.
Since this past CanThe Nintendo Switch is also Nintendo’s best-selling home console to date. Whatever the company’s future holds, it has already proven to be one of its most defining consoles for years to come.
