Nintendo plans to take action against inappropriate use of its characters that makes fans “uncomfortable.”
In a recent shareholders’ meeting (THANKS, Eurogamer), Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa was asked to address “instances on social media where Nintendo’s intellectual property and games are being used inappropriately,” which the shareholder said “poses the risk of harming the value of Nintendo’s intellectual property.”
Neither the shareholder nor Furukawa have given any specifics, but it’s safe to assume they’re talking about excited gamers. Back in 2019, Nintendo ruled out the possibility that the viral, scantily clad fan-made character Bowsette would ever become canon, but the company has so far remained silent on the many NSFW fan-made creations based on Nintendo characters that have surfaced online in the years since.
“Our company aims to implement our management policy of ‘making people smile through entertainment’ by providing unique games that everyone can enjoy intuitively,” Furukawa said. “I will refrain from commenting on individual cases, but we believe that appropriate measures should be taken against any behavior that violates this policy.”
It’s unclear what specific action Furukawa is referring to, but Nintendo is known for fiercely protecting its intellectual property through copyright infringement strikes.
“Our goal is to create an environment where everyone can enjoy playing games. We will continue to do everything we can to ensure that our consumers do not feel uncomfortable, not only in our games, but also anywhere they come into contact with our intellectual property.”
Furukawa’s vague warning isn’t likely to significantly silence Nintendo’s rabid contingent of fans, and it’s hard to imagine a strong legal argument against harmless fan mockups that aren’t being used for financial gain. If anything, it only draws an even thicker line between fan-made Nintendo characters, especially “inappropriate” ones, and official Nintendo canon.
