If I learned one thing from this edition of Connections, it was this: don’t play when you’re hungover. A slight hangover, yes, but enough to throw me off my groove. That said, I don’t know if I would have solved the problem anyway. The first group, “school facilities,” should have been accessible, but it would never have occurred to me to associate an AUDITORIUM with a school. Maybe not a LAB either; I think schools in the UK in the 1980s were perhaps a little less well-equipped with facilities than the average American high school…
I should have definitely chosen the green “BET ROULETTE” group, but I got hung up on the colors instead. I thought maybe there was a connection to the Labrador Retriever, maybe because I have one myself, so I played various combinations of RED, GOLD, BLACK, CHOCOLATE, and GRAY until I had exhausted all my guesses. I just couldn’t see what other connection there was. I would never have chosen the “Dove” group, because I’ve never heard of the chocolate dove, and even if I could have chosen the “Goose” group, I just didn’t see that connection either. Bad technique.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the many increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a bit harder, blue is often quite hard, and purple is usually very hard.
The good thing is that you don’t need to solve the last problem, because you can answer it by process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you some wiggle room.
It’s a bit more complex than Wordle, though, and the game can trick you a lot. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that might obscure the answers.
It is playable for free via the NYT Games Site on computer or mobile.
