NYT Connections Today (Game #402) – Answers
The answers to today’s Connections game, #402, are…
- YELLOW: BUILDINGS AROUND THE CITY BANK, LAUNDRY, POST OFFICE, SUPERMARKET
- GREEN: HINDER CONTROL, LIMIT, HINDER, INHIBIT
- BLUE: NAMES OF ANIMAL GROUPS PACK, PRIDE, SCHOOL, TEST
- PURPLE: DEBUT OF AMERICAN PRESIDENTS BIDE, TROLLEY, NIX, WASH
- My ranking: Moderate
- My score: 2 errors
Here’s a classic NYT mistake, and it cost me some guesswork. The first group I focused on was what turned out to be the green “Hinder” group; I had NIX, CURB, HAMPER, and INHIBIT. When that didn’t work, I replaced HAMPER with CHECK…and it still didn’t work.
At this point I looked elsewhere, rather than risk making further assumptions, and spotted the easy yellow group BANK, LAUNDRY, POST OFFICE, SUPERMARKET. Then I got the link “animal groups”, which although blue – and supposedly the third hardest – didn’t seem particularly difficult to me.
There were eight answers left, five of which still fit the “Hinder” angle. But rather than risk another mistake, I focused on the other three words, BIDE, WASHING, and CART, and realized with a flash of genius that they could all be part of the presidents’ names. That put NIX right where it belonged, and I finished the connection game.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the many increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a bit harder, blue is often quite hard, and purple is usually very hard.
The good thing is that you don’t need to solve the last problem, because you can answer it by process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you some wiggle room.
It’s a bit more complex than Wordle, though, and the game can trick you a lot. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that might obscure the answers.
It is playable for free via the NYT Games Site on computer or mobile.
