Today I had a bit of trouble with the Y-words, expecting some of them to go together, but I couldn’t find a connection. It turned out that three of them formed a group – unfortunately, that group was “Broadway musicals”, which is the least likely connection I could find. Seriously, I’d be (much) more likely to get a connection about particle physics than that one.
Anyway, that was the blue group, and it became the one I had to solve by default. It took me a while to get going, but once I established that EXPLORATORY, PILOT, PRELIMINARY, and TEST all meant the same thing, I was on my way. Next, I spotted the purple group of “Peter something,” leaving only the yellow group of SHORT, CROSS, SURLY, and TESTY to finish.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the many increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a bit harder, blue is often quite hard, and purple is usually very hard.
The good thing is that you don’t need to solve the last problem, because you can answer it by process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you some wiggle room.
It’s a bit more complex than Wordle, though, and the game can trick you a lot. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that might obscure the answers.
It is playable for free via the NYT Games Site on computer or mobile.
