NYT Strands Today (Game #133) – The Answers
The answers to today’s Strands quiz, #133, are…
- HAPPY
- NEIGH
- LARGE WIND
- FILL
- PEAT
- HAIRY
- RUSTLING
- ATOM
- SPANGRAM: HOMOPHONES
- My ranking: Moderate
- My score: Perfect
I’m a bit confused by this Strands puzzle. At first glance, it’s pretty straightforward: the answers are all homophones of names, e.g. GALE is GAIL, FILL is PHIL, PEAT is PETE. But some are marginal at best. HAIRY sounds a bit like HARRY, but it’s not really a homophone. Same for MERRY – MARY? And then there’s ATOM, which I don’t understand at all. Is it a homophone for ADAM? For TOM? In fact, I ran every word through Rhymezone’s excellent homophone search engine, and it returned results for all but WHINNY (which I’m pretty sure is WINNY) and ATOM. I really don’t know what that one is supposed to be.
Still, this was a good Strands puzzle. I always like homophones as a game topic, and this one was challenging but not impossible. More like this, please.
