Hello Strands fans. I apologize in advance for my ignorance here: as someone educated in the UK and who has never lived in the US, I can’t say I know of many American universities outside of Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and MIT – none of which are listed here.
This made today’s puzzle really difficult, and I had to use a hint on my first turn, which revealed DUKE – an institution I had heard of. BROWN to its left was also an institution I knew of, but I didn’t recognize TEMPLE, so it was just as well that it was explained so I could complete the bottom half.
UNIVERSITIES was the spangram that snaked immediately above those three words to split the board in two, leaving three answers to be found in the top half.
After trying “Western” I realized it was part of the longer NORTHWESTERN, which fortunately took up most of the top half. I had nine letters left to find two answers.
RICE was another name I didn’t know, but that left behind TUFTS, which I knew.
This was really tricky for me. It really highlights how much trouble you’re immediately in if you don’t know the topic of the theme with Strands. Hopefully tomorrow will be back in my wheelhouse…
