Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima is a busy man. Since splitting from Metal Gear publisher Konami and establishing Kojima Productions as an independent studio in 2015, Kojima has released Fatal grounding in partnership with Sony, and announced three other titles: Death Stranding 2action-spy game Physint (also with Sony), and ODa horror game published by Xbox Game Studios.
Not much is known for sure about this. ODbesides the fact that it will use Xbox’s cloud technology to create something (in Kojima’s words) “revolutionary” and “immersive” that “no one has done before.” It will also be a collaboration between Kojima and filmmaker Jordan Peele (To go out, No), as well as other anonymous creatives. Read on for all the details we were able to glean about OD.
What is ODWhat is the release date of ?
No idea, sorry. Kojima Productions and Xbox Game Studios have not yet announced a release date for OD. One thing we will say is that with the studio Death Stranding 2 scheduled for release in 2025, this is very unlikely OD will be released before 2026 at the earliest.
East OD an Xbox exclusive?
It’s hard to say! Since it’s published by Xbox Game Studios, we assume that OD will be released on Xbox Series X and Windows PC, and will also feature prominently on the Game Pass subscription service, as all internal Xbox games currently do. But it’s worth noting that no platforms are mentioned in the trailer. Depending on how long it takes to make, it’s not impossible that OD will be released on the next generation of Xbox hardware.
It’s also possible that Microsoft will choose to release it on other competing platforms, such as PlayStation — a choice it’s made recently for Xbox titles like Sea of Thievesand, reportedly, no Microsoft game is considered off the table for a multiplatform release. That said, the appeal of signing a Hideo Kojima game to your platform is the prestige and media coverage it brings, as opposed to massive sales. So that would be a strong argument in favor of OD remains exclusive to the Xbox console.
Another potential factor affecting ODXbox’s platform availability lies in its use of Xbox’s cloud gaming technology. That could limit it to Xbox platforms – or, just as likely, it could make the game easier to play anywhere, on any device. OD Will it be Xbox’s first cloud gaming exclusive?
Who is in the cast?
ODThe trailer for , which premiered at The Game Awards 2023, announced three actors who will play ODand presented their performances: Sophia Lillis (He, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), And Udo Kier (literally hundreds (Hollywood and European art house films from the 1970s to the present). Nothing is known about the roles that the three actors will play.
A person who is not confirmed to appear in OD East Marguerite Qualley. Qualley appeared in a leaked video demo of a Kojima horror game called Overdose which emerged in 2022, but may date from before. Although it is likely the same project as ODIt’s possible that the video is a proof-of-concept demo, and that Qualley filmed it while working with Kojima on the first Fatal grounding.
Who else is collaborating on it besides Jordan Peele?
When announcing OD At The Game Awards 2023, Kojima appeared alongside Peele and revealed that he would be working closely with the horror film auteur on OD. Kojima also said that Peele wasn’t his only collaborator on the project: he said he assembled a team of “legendary” storytellers to work on the game he called “The Avengers.”
The identities of the other creators remain a mystery, though Kojima has been quick to boast about their influence. “When we reveal these names, my name will be completely forgotten,” Kojima said on Twitter. Kojima Productions YouTube Channel“Every time I show this list to agents and managers, they have a hard time believing it’s true. They ask me, ‘How did you get all these people together who don’t listen to anyone? How do you do it?'”
Possible names with a horror background include Kojima’s friend Guillermo del Torowho played a role in Fatal grounding and was to collaborate with Kojima on his horror game cancelled by Konami, The Silent Hills; And Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsummer) who is one of the many Hollywood types to have visited the offices of Kojima Productions in Tokyo.
What will be ODWhat will the gameplay of , and how will it use cloud technology?
Once again, ODThe gameplay remains a mystery, though Kojima has strongly hinted that it will be at least unusual. When first announcing his partnership with Xbox, Kojima said he was creating a “never-before-seen concept,” using Xbox’s cloud gaming technology to do so. Kojima reiterated this message at OD“It’s a game, don’t get me wrong, but it’s a movie. It’s a new form of media.”
Kojima Productions states that the game “explores the concept of testing your fear threshold and what it means OD on fear — while blurring the lines between gaming and cinema.”
The escape Overdose Footage (which is no longer available online) showed what appeared to be a fairly standard survival horror game, with Qualley’s character exploring a creepy abandoned building with a flashlight and getting caught by a killer. The video also featured a picture-in-picture element showing a woman playing the game on what appeared to be a mobile device.
A Unverified Game Test Leak The game was an “experimental experience involving players using multimedia” with “lengthy cutscenes” and “active and passive gameplay.” Players would “guide” the game’s characters using information from sources outside the game, such as web pages.
Is there a connection with The Silent Hills?
Kojima’s First Attempt at Horror Was Cancelled The Silent Hillswho produced the legendary playable demo PT While Overdose it is unlikely that it is connected to The Silent Hills Anyway (the Silent Hill franchise is a Konami property), Kojima Productions dropped an Easter egg in ODThe trailer for ‘s which appears to be a — rather obscure — homage to the unrealized project.
