It’s no secret that the PlayStation VR2 headset has been struggling since its 2023 launch, and a new sale clearly highlights those challenges: Sony is currently selling the PS5 accessory for $200 off.
Normally, the headset, controllers, and a copy of Horizon: Call of the Mountain (the virtual reality spin-off of Horizon Zero Dawn) cost $600 USD. You can currently get a PS VR2 bundle for just $400 USD via PlayStation Direct or retailers like Amazon, Best buy, Walmart, TargetAnd GameStopYou can also get just the headset and controllers for $350, which is pretty close to the ideal price to buy a VR product in 2024.
This is the lowest price for the PS VR2 yet, and it’s exactly the kind of deal that could entice more PS5 owners to try it out. Or it could be offered to people who don’t even own a console but can still use the headset that’s still been widely praised for virtual PC gaming. thanks to the adapter which comes out on August 7thThe PS VR2 is still significantly more expensive than a Meta Quest 3 when you factor in the hardware needed to run it, but significantly less than the Valve Index and HTC Vive.

Since its launch, Sony has struggled to get people interested in the PS VR2. Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that the company had paused production of all new units while it tried to clear out old inventory. It also didn’t seem like Sony was really investing in encouraging adoption, from never officially lowering the price to not announcing any other big first-party exclusives coming to the platform. The lack of backwards compatibility with the original PS VR on PS4 didn’t help matters either.
Yet, PS VR2 continues to receive some new games every month. Behemoth, a fantasy action game about slaying giant monsters, was showcased at May’s State of Play and it looked pretty coolThe headset could be another warning that people aren’t quite ready for VR yet, but in the meantime, it could perhaps become a decent accessory to the PlayStation family like the PS Portal.
