Puma uses 75% recycled textile waste for all replica football shirts

Puma said it has produced millions of recycled football shirts as part of its RE:FIBRE initiative as it continues to build on the 46,000 that were produced in 2023.

The brand explained that its RE-FIBRE program plans to replace virgin polyester with recycled polyester made with a minimum of 75% recycled textile waste in all of its first-team replica football shirts for the 24/25 season, which includes the kits of 35 clubs and those of the Euro and Copa América tournaments.

The brand is exploring diverse ways to recycle polyester, such as thermomechanical and chemical recycling techniques that would significantly increase the recycling capacity of textile waste.

Puma is also looking to reduce its reliance on plastic bottles to produce products made from recycled polyester.

Anne-Laure Descours, Puma’s Chief Procurement Officer, said: “RE:FIBRE gives football fans a concrete example of how Puma is working to create a better world. Our ambition is for 100% of our polyester products to be created from textile waste. It is important to rethink the way we produce and move towards a more circular economic model, and RE:FIBRE is at the heart of this.”

In 2022, Puma said it was on track to meet its goal of making nine out of 10 products with better materials by 2025 and was continuing to power 100% of its offices, stores and warehouses with renewable energy.
