He had few options when he called triple-0 using his Apple Watch to alert emergency services to his dire situation.
Dispatchers contacted Surf Life Saving NSW who in turn requested assistance from a Westpac Lifesaver rescue helicopter based on the Gold Coast.
The man was found about 1km from Broken Head at around 10am on Saturday.
He was hoisted to safety and airlifted down the beach to a waiting ambulance, where he was treated by paramedics.
The man does not appear to have suffered any serious injuries.

Westpac’s rescue team shared the news online, giving a “huge congratulations” to the team who “undoubtedly saved a life today”.
Chief Pilot Paul Gibson said the Queensland-based rescue helicopter service was “pleased to assist our colleagues in New South Wales today with a rescue across the border”.
“The rescue is a joint effort of many parties, we were pleased to work with NSW to represent the red and yellow in the air,” he said.
“We would like to remind everyone to check conditions before entering the water, even in winter conditions can change quickly.”
Surf Lifesaving Queensland said the smartwatch was “very handy for this lucky swimmer”.
