Over the past year, the popularity of “smut” books has increased dramatically, with the genre of provocative fiction having more than 934,000 messages under #smuttok on TikTok.
By definition, “Smut” refers to books that include one or more sexually explicit scenes, and today’s TikTok generation has embraced the erotic category like never before.
Erotica readers around the world have been using the popular video-sharing app to discuss, recommend and celebrate this type of literature – but where in Australia are residents embracing the trend and reading steamy romance novels and erotic tales?
To reveal just this, Dear love The AU ranked cities* across the country based on their love of reading pornographic books, determined by the following four factors:
Total number of Google searches for “smut”
Total number of Google searches for “pornographic books”
The number of mentions of the hashtag “smut”
The overall positive sentiment associated with online smut

Sydney is officially the city most obsessed with watching porn
Sydneysiders show the highest interest in obscene reading due to its high Google search volumes for the erotica genre (34,800 and 7,080) combined with high social media engagement (13,700%), resulting in a total index score of 64.8.
Perth takes second place, Brisbane completes top 3
Perth comes in second place, with 15,600 and 3,840 total Google searches for “smut” and “smut books” as well as 19% of online posts mentioning “smut” as positive. The city is a favorite spot for smut lovers with a total index score of 59.5.
Brisbane takes third place with an overall index of 38.0, thanks to 10,560 Google searches for ‘smut’ and 2,520 searches for ‘smut books’. Additionally, with 2,900% hashtag mentions for ‘smut’ and a 24% positive sentiment around ‘smut’ online, Brisbane residents are clearly embracing the Smuttok trend.
Melbourne ranks fourth with a total of 28,000 Google searches specifically for “smut” and a further 5,760 searches for “smut books”, proving that residents are interested in the genre. Furthermore, the combined 2,900% hashtag mentions and 14% overall positive sentiment towards “smut” in Melbourne gives the capital city a total score of 35.8
Adelaide rounds out the top five cities for the most porn-obsessed with an overall index score of 26.4. The city’s residents were the second most positive about online porn, at 20.00%. Elsewhere, there were 5,760 Google searches for “porn” and 1,320 for “porn books” in the past year.
