Tech giant Microsoft abandons quantum research in Australia


Tech giant Microsoft is going to is abandoning quantum computing research in Australia, confirming plans to close its facility at the University of Sydney and consolidate the company’s quantum efforts at its Redmond, US headquarters.

The closure of Microsoft Quantum Sydney ends a long-standing quantum research collaboration with the University of Sydney under the leadership of Australian physicist Professor David Reilly, who held a joint position with Microsoft and the university.

“The University of Sydney and Microsoft have concluded their successful collaboration investigating quantum technology at the Sydney Nanoscience Hub laboratories,” a university spokesperson told InnovationAus.com.
