The B-cycle will be redesigned to achieve the objective of the circular economy

The B-cycle 2.0 consultation is now open to gather information to reform battery product management and the B-Cycle recycling system in Australia.

The Battery Stewardship Council (BSC) has announced an industry consultation on its proposal to modify and future-proof the B-cycle system.

Representatives from industry, governments and organisations are invited to provide written comments on the consultation paper on the revision of the B cycle regime.

Additionally, in-person consultation events will take place across Australia in July 2024.

The B-cycle review is being conducted due to market changes and the evolving risk profile of batteries, requiring adaptations to the current program design, according to the BSC.

“By implementing the changes proposed under the program review, B-cycle aims to achieve its mission of establishing a circular economy for batteries in Australia.”

The Battery Stewardship Council has recognized:

  • B-cycle has built a solid foundation to improve battery management and leverage our experience and learnings since its launch in early 2022
  • The current system design is limited in its ability to deliver on the BSC’s mission to create a circular economy for batteries, given the degree of market change and the evolving risk profile of batteries.
  • The current system does not provide adequate financial provisions needed to address a range of market and economic changes and trends.

The BSC said regulation would be needed to ensure full participation in the program and prevent free-riding.

Once feedback is received, the BSC will refine the proposed program design and conduct further consultations, before relaunching Cycle B 2.0 in July 2025.
