Mad Mike’s ‘MadMac’ Rotary McLaren P1

Mad Mike has revealed his latest drift creation and it may be his most outrageous build yet. It’s a McLaren P1 with a 1,000bhp triple rotary engine. No wonder he nicknamed the car “MadMac”

Unveiled overnight at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the project is a collaboration between the New Zealand drift superstar and McLaren modification specialists Lanzante, with help from some of Mike’s regular friends in Japan’s Rocket Bunny.

The MadMac has been a year in the making, with the idea first being discussed between Mad Mike and Dean Lanzante at last year’s Festival of Speed - although their conversation began with radio-controlled cars.

“I started talking to [Dean] Lanzante at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last year,” said Mad Mike Torquecafe in an exclusive interview. “Lanzante is known for building some of the craziest McLarens in the world himself. But… I didn’t know he was a McLaren fan, just like I didn’t know Dean Lanzante was a McLaren fan. I knew him because he built – when I was young, I was a Tamiya RC car enthusiast, like the old Tamiya Hornet and the Monster Beetle – [and] In fact, he built the Sand Scorcher as a full-size Beetle with all paddle tires, and he revealed it at Goodwood and ran it down the driveway on tarmac with paddle tires.

Once the duo finished talking about real-life RC cars, the discussion turned to their next project, having already created drift cars from a fleet of Mazdas to a Lamborghini Huracan.

“I thought, ‘Oh man, it’s got to be a McLaren, we’re going to take a P1 GTR, we’re going to chop it up’. At that stage it wasn’t a rotational swap, you know, I thought, ‘It’s just the connection with Bruce being a Kiwi,'” Mad Mike explained.

“But you know, a lot of people in the world don’t know the Bruce connection either, but the Goodwood Festival of Speed, well, the Goodwood circuit itself is where, sadly, Bruce lost his life, but there’s a couple of stories that I wanted to tell, and I mean, if you’re going to cut up a hypercar, a supercar, you know, it’s got to be a McLaren or something. So, yeah, that’s what ended up happening.

“And Lanzante, you know, we go from this conversation, like I said, talking about Tamiya RC cars to him saying, ‘Oh, well, I have the McLarens.’ I thought, ‘Holy crap, man, who is this guy?’ It’s just amazing. You never know who’s who, you know, and for me, I love entertaining and I guess for me, building cars is like expressing my personality and my style through the way I build them and put them together.”

The MadMac will be on display at Goodwood this weekend and will also be driven around the estate’s famous driveway, where Mad Mike will no doubt destroy a few tyres.
