This is the weekend that all artists are looking forward to. On Saturday night, the winners of the Cossack Art Awards will be announced.
This year the judges are Sarah Elson, De Gillet Cox and Steve Makse. After their deliberations, they went to the Ngaarda Radio studios to speak with Marion Cheedy.
De Gillet Cox said: “It was such a privilege. I felt extremely flattered and extremely excited, and I’ve never been to Western Australia. Let alone here in Cossack and the Pilbara. I feel like I understand the world better after seeing the landscape and the artwork. It was an absolute joy and it was a tough job for you, my goodness. Yes, we spent two whole days asking each other questions to make sure we could understand each other’s point of view. It was really hard work.”
Sarah Elson added: “I’m interested in uniqueness, for sure, and storytelling, and art making, and layout or canvas, or you know, with your media, it’s an act of self-expression, so I don’t think any piece of art can be bad.”
Steve Makse commented: “A big thank you for the generosity of this place and for allowing us to enjoy the scenery. We met all sorts of amazing and interesting people.”
We asked the judges if they could give us any clues about the winners, but they declined to answer. All will be revealed on Saturday night, and starting Sunday, you can admire the artwork for yourself at Cossack. The exhibition is free and runs until August 11.
