Dyson offers new headphones that don’t cover your mouth this time

Dyson announced his second pair of over-ear headphones, and his first that doesn’t look like a high-tech gimp mask.

Dyson calls the new cans OnTrac. which should not be confused with the carrier of the same name and spelling. Unlike the Dyson Zone earbuds that came before them, the OnTrac earbuds don’t connect to an air purifier that wraps around your mouth and makes you look like you’re cosplaying as a cyborg. Dyson describes the OnTrac as “audio only” headphones just to make the distinction clear.

These are expensive headphones, aimed at audiophiles and anyone willing to spend upwards of $500 for some nice, cushy sound cannons. The OnTrac’s design is also extremely customizable; Dyson lets users swap out the ear cushions and outer caps of the earbuds to change their colors. There will only be four color options at launch, but Dyson says more choices will come later. The company says the headphones will have many of the features of a modern high-end headset, including a noise-canceling feature that can reduce up to 40 decibels of noise. Dyson also claims the OnTrac will have a truly insane 55 hours of battery life under typical use.

The OnTrac headphones aren’t on sale yet, and Dyson hasn’t said when they will be. But once they are available, they’ll start at $500, with a few customizations that will push the price up from there.

Here are some other consumer tech news from this week.

Buy now, pay later

Congratulations to everyone who got those cheaper AirPods on Amazon this week. You helped make Prime Day 2024 the biggest Prime Day ever. Amazon vacuumed it up $14.2 billion on sale during the two-day event. That’s a significant increase from its 2023 sale, which brought in a meager $12 billion.

Amazon Prime Day sales were higher than ever, thanks in part to the proliferation of buy-now-pay-later plans. Adobe AnalyticsPeople have purchased over $1 billion worth of goods through these deferred payment plans. This is great for Apple and for anyone happy with their new 65-inch OLED TV, but it’s worth noting that BNPL plans come with hidden dangers that can tempt people into taking on more debt than they can afford.

Pixel Preview

After many details about Google’s new phones leaked, the company decided to simply show its next Pixel to the world. In a post about X, Google revealed the first official preview on its Pixel 9 Pro. Google has teased the phone’s integration with the company’s Gemini AI software and said more details about the phone lineup will be available on August 13. (Expect these Pixels to be packed to the brim with AI, if Google’s recent product announcements have given us any idea.)
