British wearable device company Ultrahuman has launched an atrial fibrillation (AF) detection feature on its Ring AIR smart ring.
At the same time, the company launched PowerPlugs, a platform of individual apps and plugins to customize health tracking through Ring AIR. PlowerPlugs apps and plugin options include atrial fibrillation detection, circadian rhythm, pregnancy mode, menstrual cycle and ovulation tracking, caffeine consumption, vitamin D management, jet lag programs, and weight loss management.
“When it comes to health, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. That’s why we created PowerPlugs so people can choose what matters most to their health and well-being,” said Mohit Kumar, CEO of Ultahuman.
“Over the next few years, we can expect thousands of applications to be built on Ultrahuman’s comprehensive health data platform.”
As part of atrial fibrillation detection, the device monitors the individual’s heart rhythm every night. Atrial fibrillation is an abnormal and irregular heart rhythm, associated with an increased risk of various cardiovascular diseases, including stroke and heart failure. The detection function is powered by FibriCheck technology approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The wearable technology market has seen growth in recent years, driven by the Covid-19 pandemic. GlobalData estimates that the wearable technology market is expected to reach $156 billion by 2024.

Several companies have developed smart rings for health tracking. One of the most prominent players in this space is Finnish company Oura. In November 2023, the company partnered with period tracking and reproductive health app Clue to integrate biometric data collected by the Oura ring into the Clue app. The Oura ring tracks temperature, and the Clue app then uses this data to assess an individual’s fertility.
Bontara, another India-based company, offers a smart ring. The device tracks various health parameters including heart rate, blood oxygen, and sleep quality. It also syncs with continuous glucose monitors to generate a metabolic score to better manage diabetes.
